After two years of hard work, an abundance of volunteerism and extensive community support, the Somerset Lorne Citizens Museum officially opened its doors on May 31st, 2014! Held in a building which used to be a bank, the museum will now hold artefacts, pictures, items of our ancestors, and help keep the past alive for the current and future generations.
Visitors are welcome to tour the museum. Their hours for the months of June through August are 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday.
During the Spring and Summer season at the nature park come out and enjoy the trails, and the beautiful surroundings. Enjoy a day of cycling or walking along an 8-foot wide asphalt trail. The trail reaches Altona from the south via the rail line trail to Gretna and from the west at the Buffalo Creek Nature Park. This trail is part of the longest multi-use trail in the world – The Trans Canada Trail. Catch and release fishing is a popular activity at the Buffalo Creek Nature Park! In the winter season the pond is cleared for skating, and the hill is great for tobogganing. This is a popular spot for tobogganing in winter as well as pleasure skating on the pond, which is cleared and flooded. The field house makes an ideal warm up spot for changing, restrooms or a hot cup of hot chocolate.
The Altona campground is located along the south border of the Buffalo Creek Nature Park, which is adjacent to Altona Centennial Park. With Altona’s many other attractions including the Aquatic Centre, Gallery in the Park, golf course and shopping mall, it’s the perfect place to call home during the summer.
All sites are serviced and include 30 amp electrical and water.
The best place to spend a day in the sun! Feel the rush of a plunge down the 133-foot waterslide. Or, stay cool while splashing with the kids among the centre’s spray columns, water geysers, water cannons and jumbo spraying sunflower. There is also a Junior Olympic size pool.
